Whether we realize it or not, the average American encounters up to 10,000 ads a day. Many of them paint a rosy picture of the perfect life – the happy marriage, well-behaved kids, and fulfilling job. The message is only driven harder by our social media feeds, saturated with well-filtered photos of our friends’ relaxing vacations, beautiful homes, and creative meals.
But life outside the Instagram snapshots is complex. It involves messy homes, parenting issues, and marriages that fall well short of our expectations. Unfortunately, the pressure to put up the facade is sometimes greatest in the Church. Yet this is where authenticity should thrive, where we should feel most comfortable being honest about our struggles and shortcomings with others who love and support us. But how can we experience this rich community with God and others?
