The Family Advent Guide

The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which is a translation of the Greek word parousia. During Advent, we celebrate the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem, his coming into our hearts, and his sure Second Coming.

As late as the fourth century, some Christians had begun designating a period before Christmas preparing for the coming of Jesus’ birth. It was set aside as a time of fasting, praying, and hearing sermons focused on the wonder of the Incarnation. Today, the season of Advent lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas.

For four weeks before Christmas, our devotion, meditation, and worship calls us into a time to wait for the coming of the Lord. We begin at what may seem a distance from the coming of Christ in Bethlehem and proceed closer each week to the birth.

The Guide

This Advent season, we’ve prepared a special guide to help your family celebrate and reflect on the coming of Christ. Pick up a printed copy on Sunday morning or grab a digital copy here to follow along.

This advent booklet uses a five candle advent wreath, one candle for each week and a fifth, center candle for Christmas Eve. Each day, starting on the Monday following Thanksgiving, light the candle that corresponds with that week, plus those candles from the previous week. Then read the designated passage, listen to the song and pray together as you reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and the coming of Christ.
